Programming

The Birthright Nepal Fellowship is an 8 week fellowship where Nepali Diaspora work in leading Nepali research institutes and non-profit organizations in Kathmandu to develop their professional accumen and contribute to Nepal's future. On the weekends, fellows will  participate in cultural excursions as well a comprehesive language course to become closer to their Nepali heritage.

Purpose

We believe that it is every Nepali’s birthright to connect with their homeland through unique and enriching experiences. Birthright Nepal will cultivate these experiences through an 8-week fellowship and immersion program for recent graduates or young professionals from the Nepali Diaspora. These experiences are intended to help fellows achieve their professional goals, expand networks, and create ties with the homeland.

    What is the Birthright Fellowship?

The Birthright Fellowship is an 8-week program where Nepali diaspora reconnect with their heritage through service and cultural experiences in Nepal.

    What does the fellowship involve?

Fellows work with partner non-profits during the week and participate in cultural excursions around Kathmandu on weekends.

    When and how long is the fellowship?

The fellowship begins in July 2025 and runs for 8 weeks.

    What types of organizations can I apply to?

A variety, including public health groups like ASK Foundation and research organizations like the Center for Molecular Dynamics Nepal.

    Who can apply?

Applicants must have atleast one parent of Nepali heritage, have been raised primarily outside of Nepal, be at least 21 years old and have a college degree by the start of the fellowship.

    How many fellows will be selected?

A total of 4 fellows will be chosen for the inaugural cohort.

    Is the fellowship free?

Fellowship costs, including airfare and cultural programs, will be heavily subsidized, contingent upon successful completion of the program.

    How does the application process work?

Applicants will submit a form, selecting a specific organization. Applications are reviewed in March, with fellows announced in April/May after evaluation by the Birthright team and partner organizations.
